History
Why name your business Chalo Sulky?
The first sulky that I owned was made in Australia. It was a fine sulky, although too wide to be practical in the city. I decided to be its US sales person. I was unable to sell them because they were marketed via a talk group.
I wanted to sell dog sulkies, though, so after a year with no sales, I decided to develop my own sulky. I discovered Chalo Colina. Chalo is a bicycle enthusiast who loved to design and build wheeled things different from the average bicycle. At the time he worked with me, Chalo was a machinist for a company in Seattle that designs and develops space ships. Chalo willingly worked with me on many Tuesday evenings after work at his shop in Seattle. He researched parts we could order via his incredible ability with a computer. He bought all the parts we needed with his own money including shocks, wheels, aluminum bars and brake fittings. He machined the custom fork crowns on the computer operated machines in his shop.
After about a year of work, we had our first sulky. I named it the chalo sulky. I was thrilled with it.
Chalo Colina now lives in Austin, Texas, with his musician wife, Datri Bean. As you can see from the photo below, Chalo loves cats. He and Datri have several cats and no dogs.
Our harnesses are made by Commercial Fabric Manufacturing in Seattle, Washington USA. Walter Cummings is shown here working on inflatable saddle pads that go underneath the saddles of horses. He uses the same laminated fabric to make Chalo Sulky harnesses.
